Professional knowledge and skills obtained after completing the programme:

Specialists in Applied Linguistics obtain professional knowledge and form professional skills for the following tasks:

  • Translation of scientific and technical literature;
  • Development of language interface and dialogue systems of communication with the computer;
  • Creating funds of natural language;
  • Development of electronic dictionaries and terminology data banks;
  • Improving existing and creating new systems of computer translation;
  • Computer abstracting, annotation and indexing of scientific and technical documentation;
  • Computer maintenance thesauri and database information retrieval systems;
  • Content analysis of texts of mass communication;
  • Development of knowledge bases for expert systems;
  • Computer design.

Programme requirements (ECTS credits).

In accordance with the Standard on Higher Education set for the programme Applied Linguistics (Master’s degree), 90 ECTS credits are awarded in total. The curriculum of the programme Applied Linguistics (Master’s degree) incorporates: mandatory courses (35,5 ECTS credits) including course papers (1 ECTS credits) and elective courses (24, 5 ECTS credits). Practical training which includes internship – 27 ECTS credits. Bachelor’s thesis (3 ECTS credits).

Educational goals of the programme.

- ensure training Masters in Philology. Applied Linguistics using a competency based approach to the education process in accordance with the modern European educational standards and requirements of the national and global labor market;

- provide students with systematic knowledge and skills in advanced computer linguistics and applied linguistics techniques required for formation of the competences of a Master in Applied Linguistics;

- train qualified professionals who are able to find independently relevant ways of achieving the most important strategic objectives in their jobs by conducting linguistic research of different text and language data by means of using computer and information technologies and the languages known to them (their mother tongue (L1), English, and the second foreign language they have learned);

- develop in students the modern outlook on the role of applied linguistics in creating, transforming, editing, and analyzing texts in different languages in all areas of human activities and, in particular, in philological/linguistic research;

- teach students to use the full range of analytical tools from the computer/information technology for creating, transforming, editing, and analyzing texts in different languages and for their philological/linguistic research;

- develop graduates as mature social individuals capable of solving complex communications challenges and social tasks within their competence;

- develop in the study process the students’ professional skills required for successfully solving all the variety of tasks and problems related to applied linguistics that may face graduates in their jobs and research;

- improve the learning skills that enable graduates to continue their study in accordance with the concept of "lifelong learning" in a manner that may be largely self-directed or autonomous.
